First up in another double console order is a Sega 32X! Came in for a recap service, cleaning and Zaxour buzzkill mod.
Found the coil whine quite low on this compared to others I have worked but but still a change in perceivable sound and the buzzkill also offers an improved modern switching power circuit.
Started by tearing down the console and getting all plastic parts soaked and washed so they could dry overnight. Observed significant rust on the genesis side contact pads so once it was dry I buffed those to the best of my ability, they look better for sure but hard to get back to completely stock in my experience
Next up was the recap service. All old caps removed including the Polymer cap which usually is not replaced, in this case because that and CE16 stay removed to allow for the Buzzkill. Used the empty board as a change to really get in there and clean both sides before installing all new caps from Console5. I also did the video noise fix caps including the new value ceramic on the sub board!
Part of the cleaning also involved cleaning the top side cart slot and bottom side edge connector
Last order of business on the internals was to clean both sides of both ribbon connectors with 99% iso then applied a light coat of deoxit and worked it into the 4 connectors and got them snapped in before reassembly. These ribbon connectors are the most frequent issue with the 32X but luckily with some maintenance its an easy fix, hopefully it will last for many more years now!
Got the bare boards plugged in for a quick test to confirm operation then signed off with a JRG sticker on the inside of top shell (not a lot of room inside these otherwise) and then reassembled and did a burn in test for a few hours using both the Mars test program on my flash cart and some NBA Jam!
32X seemed to be working great, looked better and was running perfect so thats 1/2 of the order done!
